Surprisingly, after receiving back the package from Nokia Center in Canada, the keyboard backlight was working again. I suspect that the device was shaken during shipping and that the loose contacts have fixed themselves.
Well, thanks to Canada Post for saving some time. I am sorry readers, but you will not get a complete solution on how to fix the device. But trust me, if ever you face that problem, soldering the loose contact is probably candy. I hardly believe that the backlight would need replacement since it’s made of a special material which is reliable.
Being unable to integrate VOIP perfectly with the phone, I decided to get rid of it and sell it on eBay. I was using the device without a registered SIM card to make calls only from WIFI networks. I was able to place many calls but the lack of support while switching networks and the fact that the phone does not try to connect on any open network makes it hard to manage VOIP. The good point about Nokia’s ESeries devices is that it has a nice framework to quickly build solid applications. While the native VOIP client was not satisfying my needs, I could have built a better application to fix the known issues with VOIP. There are some third party applications for VOIP over the E61 but unfortunately, to get them you need to send an SMS to their link. Since VOIP and WIFI support on E61 means you do not need a SIM card to place calls, there was no chance I could get my hand on one of these third party applications.
Finally, the main reason I have sold my E61 is that the 3GSM event in Barcelona will start around Febuary 12th and Nokia may present the E61i phone. This would have lowered the value of my E61. That new model adds a camera, new shortcut buttons and a new design on the joystick. These are all great enhancements for the E61.
